Importance of Republic Day
Constitution came into force and the country was declared as the largest democracy in the world. After India gained  Independence from the British rule on August 15, 1947, it was felt that there was a need for a written constitution to run the country systematically. After this, a committee was formed, which was headed by  Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar
 to draft the constitution.
It was on November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India formally adopted the Constitution of India. However, it came into force on January 26, 1950. Since then India celebrates Republic Day on January 26 as
The constitution declares India a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic, assuring justice, equality, liberty and promoting fraternity to all its citizens.
